1. A kachina can be a spirit, or supernatural being, as exists in the minds
of some of the Southwestern American Indians.
2. A kachina can be a real live person, dressed and costumed to represent
the spirit form, or the supernatural being.
3. A kachina can be a carved doll, representing the spirit form. These maybe
should be more accurately called a kachina doll, however, in
this web site, and in common usage, the term kachina is used
rather than add the doll portion to the description.
During dances or other ceremonies in the Pueblos of the Southwest, these
kachinas appear in the form of live dancers in costumes or make-up representing
some of these spirits.
No one knows for certain how many of these kachinas exist, but they number
in the many hundreds. However, most of the more popular ones probably are
numbered in the fifties or sixties. In a broad m
anner of speaking, the kachinas play a role somewhat similar to the saints
of the Christian religion. Or, to the Easter Bunny, or Santa Claus. Some
are supposed to be the spirits of very good men, but some are also demons
or ogres - not necessarily good!
Some of the Indian children believe in kachinas just as our children believe
in Santa Claus. In a kachina ceremony, the children are not supposed to recognize
their fathers, uncles, or other relatives who are disguised by masks and
elaborate costumes.
Kachina dolls are given to children not as toys, but as objects to be treasured
and studied so that the young may become familiar with the appearance of
the kachinas as part of their training. Kachina dolls are neither idols to
be worshipped or ikons to be prayed to, but only as objects for use in the
education of the children. Too find out more about the dolls and what they
mean check out the Kachina Dictionary Page.
